Wine description for Marsannay „les Champs Perdrix“ 2023 by Jérôme Galeyrand

Character
Marsannay is regarded as the northern gateway to the Côte de Nuits – and Jérôme Galeyrand is among those winemakers who are bringing this often underestimated appellation to new prominence through consistent hands-on work and a deep understanding of terroir. The „Les Champs Perdrix“ – in English: the fields of partridges – bears a name that evokes the rural tranquillity of this vineyard site and promises what Galeyrand always strives for: authenticity rather than calculation.
Terroir & Origin
The commune of Marsannay-la-Côte lies at the northern tip of the Côte de Nuits, immediately south of Dijon. The soils here alternate between calcareous clay and limestone, which imparts a characteristic minerality to the wines. The vintage 2023 was marked by exceptional warmth in Burgundy, yet thanks to cool nights in late summer, it produced wines with remarkable freshness and aromatic precision – despite the early harvest date.
Grape Variety & Vinification
As is to be expected for the bulk of red Marsannay wines, this wine is based on Pinot Noir – the only red grape variety that truly matters in the Côte d’Or. Galeyrand works according to biodynamic principles, avoids excessive intervention in the cellar and relies on spontaneous fermentation as well as careful maturation in wooden casks. The result is wines that allow the terroir to speak for itself, rather than imposing upon it – artisanal restraint in the finest sense.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The elegant structure and earthy depth of a Marsannay in Galeyrand’s style make this wine an ideal companion to classic Burgundian fare. Recommended pairings include Coq au Vin, rabbit with mustard sauce or a simple roasted chicken. It also reveals its full character when paired with aged Époisses or a peppery Comté.
