Wine description for Les Charmes rouge AOC 2019 by Charles Joguet

Colour & Appearance
A luminous garnet red in the glass, which emphasises the youthfulness and vitality of this Cabernet Franc.
Nose
Subtle, yet with impressive depth, this Les Charmes presents itself with restraint. The aromatics unfold delicately with red currants, barberries and cranberries, complemented by cherries and the characteristic Loire notes of red pepper, ripe tomatoes and tomato leaves. A bouquet that rewards patience.
Palate
Here the true potential of this vintage reveals itself. The wine is still youthfully firm, with robust, ripe tannins that provide structure and backbone. The present acidity ensures freshness and tension. Despite the still pronounced tannins, the wine already glows from within and hints at sensual qualities to come. The wood spice is already well integrated – a sign of careful winemaking.
Finish
Firm and persistent, with the fruity freshness typical of Cabernet Franc and a fine spice that will gain in elegance.
Terroir & Origin
The Les Charmes vineyard lies on the left bank of the Vienne on the heights of Anché near Sazilly. The clay and limestone-rich terroir with its north-facing aspect gives the wine its characteristic depth and coolness. The 35-year-old Cabernet Franc vines produce concentrated, expressive grapes.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pure Cabernet Franc, vinified with five days of cold maceration and 15 days of maceration fermentation at moderate temperatures of 24-26°C in wooden vats. The free-run wine is blended with the finest press wines. Malolactic fermentation and six to eight months of ageing take place in large wooden barrels.
Food Pairing Suggestions
With herb-crusted lamb rack, duck breast cooked pink, beef steak or aged goat’s cheese. The acidity and tannins harmonise beautifully with mushroom dishes and braised meats.
Special Features
The 2019 Les Charmes still shows itself somewhat closed, but promises to develop the charm that does justice to its name in two to three years‘ time. An excellent vintage with considerable ageing potential from Charles Joguet, one of the Loire’s most renowned producers.
