Wine Description for Klause am Berg Riesling trocken 2012 1500ml Magnum from Nikolaihof

Colour & Appearance
Radiant, mature lemon yellow with luminous brilliance – a Riesling that carries its twelve years with dignity whilst having lost none of its vitality.
Nose
A remarkably multi-layered aromatic profile that oscillates between fruit and spice. Golden stone fruit and honeydew melon meet grapefruit, whilst vegetal notes of mangetout and carrots interweave with the herbs tarragon and lemon balm. This complexity never feels intrusive, but rather comes together to form a delicate, almost meditative aromatic picture.
Palate
Here the true class of this Riesling reveals itself: after a decade, it presents itself as light-footed yet simultaneously tension-filled, with an acid structure that is perfectly integrated and lends the wine backbone without dominating. The texture is dense and rich, the concentration impressive, the balance impeccable. A wine that captivates until the last drop.
Finish
Long, precise and with persistent minerality – the wine takes its leave with elegance and leaves the impression that its ageing potential is far from exhausted.
Terroir & Origin
The Klause forms the uppermost part of the Ried Gaisberg in Stein, a small terraced parcel at 230-330 metres above sea level, named after a historic hermitage. The south-easterly orientation and the surrounding forest create a unique microclimate. The subsoil of Gföhl gneiss, mica schist and amphibolite lends the wine its characteristic minerality and complexity.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Pan-fried pike-perch with herb butter, boiled veal with root vegetables, aged mountain cheese or asparagus with hollandaise sauce – this Riesling harmonises with both refined and classic dishes of elevated Austrian cuisine.
Special Features
Archive Release 2024 – a rare opportunity to experience a perfectly matured Wachau Riesling in magnum bottle. The biodynamic working methods of Nikolaihof and the twelve years of maturation make this wine an extraordinary document of time.
