Wine Description for Hefeabzug Grüner Veltliner trocken 2016 by Nikolaihof

Colour & Appearance
Fresh, pale lemon yellow in the glass – youthfully vibrant despite its eight years of maturity.
Nose
A captivating Veltliner aromatics in their purest form: fennel, celery, asparagus and spring onion form a vegetable foundation, complemented by fresh chervil, coriander leaves and bread crust. Notes of freshly mown grain underscore the spring character. An aromatic complexity that unites vegetable garden, herb bed and wildflower meadow – captivating and multifaceted.
Palate
Stimulating and mouth-filling, with impressive drinking flow. The stony minerality from the crystalline granite soils lends the wine a refined, precise backbone. Despite moderate 12% alcohol, it displays remarkable structure. The balance between fresh vibrancy and mature elegance is masterful – a wine that has retained its youthfulness without sacrificing depth.
Finish
Remarkably long and mineral-driven, with a fine echo of the vegetable aromas. The stony undertones resonate persistently.
Terroir & Origin
The grapes come primarily from the legendary vineyard site Steiner Goldberg (first mentioned in 1302), supplemented by fruit from Mautern. The vineyard lies at 300-380 metres elevation with south to east exposure. The subsoil of paragneiss, mica schist and quartzite forms loamy-sandy deep soils with a high stone content – dry, permeable and lime-free. In Mautern, loess and loam dominate.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Green asparagus with beurre blanc, roasted fennel with lemon, spring vegetable risotto, pike-perch or trout with herbs, goat’s cheese, Asian dishes with coriander and ginger.
Special Features
Archive Release 2024 – a wine that has undergone eight years of bottle maturation and impressively demonstrates the exceptional ageing potential of Grüner Veltliner from great vineyard sites. The biodynamically farmed Nikolaihof shows here how Veltliner gains in complexity with time, without losing its characteristic freshness.
