Tasting note
Character
A dry Grüner Veltliner of quiet greatness: cool, taut and marked by pronounced mineral tension. Rather than overt fruit, the Schlossberg reveals that nutty spice, white pepper and fine structure which distinguish great Wagram Veltliners. A wine with backbone and ageing potential – from the house of Fritsch, whose philosophy culminates in Karl Fritsch’s words: “I am simply not as good as nature.”
Terroir & Origin
The Wagram, some 60 kilometres west of Vienna, owes its name to a striking terrace along the Danube valley – a fossilised coastline of the ancient Tethys Sea. Mighty loess deposits, interspersed with calcium-rich marine sediment, store water and nutrients like a natural sponge. In vineyard sites such as the Schlossberg, slate and granite join the picture, lending the Veltliner its unmistakable mineral imprint. Its classification as an Erste Lage (1.ÖTW) by the Traditionsweingüter Österreich underlines the standing of this terroir – the Fritsch estate has belonged to this circle since late 2007.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Grüner Veltliner is Austria’s flagship white variety and finds a particularly expressive home on the Wagram. Since 2006, Karl Fritsch has farmed his roughly 25 hectares biodynamically – as a founding member of respekt-BIODYN, exchanging ideas with like-minded growers such as Clemens Busch. His own compost, biodynamic preparations and a living ecosystem in the vineyard form the foundation; in the cellar, work follows cosmic rhythms. The result is wines of clarity and authenticity that let their origin speak unadorned.
Food Pairings
A versatile companion at the table: classically paired with Wiener Schnitzel or Tafelspitz, yet equally convincing alongside asparagus, grilled vegetables and trout. Asian cuisine too – Pad Thai or sushi, for instance – finds an alert partner in its spice and freshness.
