The Gotes del Priorat represents the accessible side of one of Spain’s most demanding wine regions. As the house entry-level wine from Portal del Priorat, it combines the characteristic minerality and power of Priorat with a freshness that defines the young 2023 vintage. This classic Cuvée of Grenache and Carignan delivers an authentic, unpretentious expression of this legendary provenance.
Terroir & Origin
Priorat, located south-west of Barcelona, ranks among Spain’s two DOCa regions – the highest quality classification. The region is characterised by the famous Llicorella slate soils, whose dark, glimmering slate plates retain heat whilst providing excellent drainage. These barren, mineral-rich soils, combined with the Mediterranean climate and steep hillside vineyards, produce wines of extraordinary concentration and minerality. The 2023 vintage benefited from favourable conditions that promoted freshness and balance.
Grape Variety & Vinification
The combination of Grenache (Garnacha) and Carignan (Cariñena) is the traditional backbone of Priorat. Grenache provides juicy fruit, fullness and alcohol warmth, whilst Carignan contributes structure, acidity and earthy notes. As an entry-level wine, the Gotes is likely designed for accessibility and fruit-forward character, possibly with shorter maceration time and ageing in neutral vessels or only a small proportion of new oak, to preserve the primary fruit and minerality.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Its Mediterranean provenance makes this wine ideal for Catalan cuisine: grilled vegetables, chorizo, Manchego or Calçots with Romesco sauce are classic partners. It also harmonises beautifully with lamb chops, ratatouille, aubergine dishes or meat paella.
