Wine Description for Gimmeldinger Schlössel Spätburgunder VDP Erste Lage 2021 by Christmann

Colour & Appearance
Radiant, dark cherry red with delicate bluish reflections – an optical promise of depth and concentration.
Nose
Restrained yet precise, an exemplary play of aromas unfolds. Wild strawberries, sour cherries and morello cherries are threaded through with a remarkable herbal spice: intense lovage, summer savory and parsley create ethereal counterpoints to the fruit. Austere notes of forest floor and juniper lend the wine backbone and length – a Spätburgunder that prioritises elegance over opulence.
Palate
The nose finds its seamless continuation: crisp, fresh sour cherry and morello cherry are framed by perfectly integrated, high-toned acidity that never steals the show from the fruit. Lovage dominates the herbal notes, supported by mint, juniper and pepper. A fine earthy forest floor note characterises the finish and underscores the terroir-driven style.
Finish
Medium length with persistent herbal spice and earthy nuances. The acidity carries the aromatics elegantly – a wine that relies on finesse rather than power.
Terroir & Origin
The Erste Lage Schlössel vineyard site in Gimmeldingen lies north of the renowned Meerspinne on gently east-facing terrain. The soil of calcareous loess and bunter sandstone gravel gives the wine its mineral structure and austere spice. Christmann cultivates 0.9 hectares here, which were replanted to Spätburgunder in 2017.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Harvest on 18 September 2021, spontaneous fermentation with 10% whole bunches. Maturation until February 2022 in barrique (20% new wood), bottled in May 2023. This restrained oak treatment allows the terroir to take centre stage – a classical, Burgundy-inspired approach.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Braised duck leg with orange sauce, smoked venison ham with mixed leaf salad or grilled Portobello mushrooms with herb butter harmonise beautifully with the herbal spice and earthy structure of the wine.
Special Characteristics
A young vineyard site that already displays remarkable character depth. The 2021 vintage demonstrates Christmann’s instinct for precise, terroir-driven Spätburgunder – a wine with development potential.
