Wine Description for Gelber Muskateller Dry 2013 from Nikolaihof

Colour & Appearance
Mature lemon yellow with golden reflections – a wine that carries its eleven years with grace and has already reached a beautiful maturation phase.
Nose
Fascinatingly complex and unconventional: saffron and curry open an exotic aromatic interplay, followed by coconut flakes, mint, sage and surprisingly green notes of tomato leaves. This archive release impressively demonstrates how Gelber Muskateller develops a spicy, almost Mediterranean complexity over time.
Palate
Powerful, energetic entry with impressive substance – despite moderate 10.5% alcohol. The acidity is perfectly integrated, the texture creamy and soft. A fine bitter note on the finish lends the wine additional length and tension, preventing any heaviness.
Finish
Surprisingly long and persistent. The subtle bitterness carries the spicy aromas further and leaves a fresh, vibrant aftertaste.
Terroir & Origin
From the vineyard site Bischofpoint in Mautern and Baumgarten, between 246 and 340 metres altitude. The north-north-easterly exposure and the characteristic Rigol soil with loess and loam shape the character of this wine from the outstanding 2013 vintage.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pure Gelber Muskateller from the biodynamically managed Nikolaihof. The variety finds ideal conditions in the Wachau and impressively demonstrates its ageing potential here – far removed from simple Muskateller clichés.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Predestined for asparagus dishes with Hollandaise sauce or nut butter. The spicy notes also harmonise beautifully with roasted fennel, goat’s cheese or Asian curries based on coconut.
Special Features
Archive Release 2024 – a rare testament to the ageing potential of Gelber Muskateller from great vintages. Nikolaihof, Austria’s oldest wine estate, has managed its vineyards according to biodynamic principles (Demeter) since 1971. A wine for lovers of mature, characterful white wines away from the mainstream.
