Wine Description for French Disko VdF rouge 2024 by Matassa

Character
Tom Lubbe of Matassa is among the pioneers of the natural wine movement in Roussillon. His „French Disko“ is a homage to the lightness and drinkability that Cinsault can produce in this southern region. With just 11% alcohol, this wine deliberately positions itself against the heaviness of many Roussillon red wines, instead championing finesse over power. The name itself is programmatic: a playful, accessible wine that comments with a wink on the discourse surrounding „serious“ wines.
Terroir & Origin
Roussillon, wedged between the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean, is characterised by intense sunshine and mineral-rich soils. Matassa works old parcels with slate and granite weathered soils that retain natural freshness despite the heat. Proximity to the sea and the Tramontana winds provide cooling influences. Lubbe’s approach is radically minimalist in intervention: biodynamic viticulture, low yields and a deep understanding of the natural rhythms of his vineyards define the philosophy.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Cinsault is often underestimated, yet in the right hands the variety delivers aromatic complexity and silky texture. Lubbe harvests early to preserve natural freshness and keep alcohol levels low. Vinification takes place without additives, with wild yeasts and minimal sulphur. Ageing in neutral vessels allows fruit and terroir to take centre stage. The result is a wine of crystalline clarity that holds fruit, spice and mineral tension in perfect balance – a counterpoint to over-extracted, alcoholic southern wines.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The lightness and freshness make this wine an ideal companion for grilled tuna, lamb cutlets with Provençal herbs or Catalan cured meat specialities. It also shines alongside ratatouille, grilled vegetables or a simple tomato and anchovy tart. A wine that invites uncomplicated enjoyment.
