Wine Description for Foam White Petnat 2022 by Meinklang

Colour & Appearance
Slightly hazy orange-red with bright and brownish reflections – a vibrant, natural Pétillant Naturel with intense, persistent mousse. The unfiltered appearance immediately reveals: nothing has been refined here.
Nose
Fascinatingly complex and spicy. Orange zest and rosehip tea dominate, underpinned by cinnamon, juniper and white pepper. Wild garden herbs bring freshness, whilst browning apples, pear compote and caramelised quince evoke domestic stone fruit. Added to this are marzipan, baked apple and repeatedly these intense notes of rooibos tea and rosehip – an aromatic rollercoaster.
Palate
The carbonation froths generously and lends the wine surprising fullness and smoothness. The fruit presents itself even spicier than on the nose, yet the true character reveals itself through the pronounced tannins: angular, masculine, wonderfully rustic. The acidity cuts precisely through fruit and tannin, whilst the phenolic structure remains steadfast. In the aftertaste, tea aromas and orange return with renewed intensity.
Finish
Medium to long, characterised by the phenolic texture and the spicy tea and citrus notes. The tannins remain present and lend the finish grip and structure.
Terroir & Origin
From the uncut Graupert vineyard site at Lake Neusiedl, which is left entirely to nature – biodynamic farming in its purest form.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Gris (Grauburgunder), harvested at the end of September. Five-day skin fermentation, then pressing and bottling with 20g/l residual sugar – still fermenting, without any additives. Fermentation concludes naturally in the bottle. After seven months on lees, disgorged by hand. Authentic Pétnat according to méthode ancestrale.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This rustic character demands bold flavours: Lasagne Bolognese, braised beef tongue with chorizo and plum, but also red lentil stew with artichoke. The tannins make it an ideal companion for meat dishes.
Special Features
An unconventional, uncompromising natural wine that redefines Grauburgunder. Not for purists of classical style, but a fascinating experience for the adventurous.
