Wine Description for Cuvée 20° Vino di Contrada IGT Sicilia 2023 by Occhipinti

Character
Arianna Occhipinti’s „Cuvée 20°“ embodies the light-footed elegance of the Frappato grape in its purest form. The name refers to the average temperature during vinification – a detail that underscores Occhipinti’s precise, artisanal approach. This wine reveals the bright, fragrant side of Sicily, far removed from clichéd opulence: cool, eminently drinkable, with a structure that recalls Burgundy rather than the hot south.
Terroir & Origin
The estate is located in south-eastern Sicily, near Vittoria, a zone with calcareous clay and maritime influence. The Contrada philosophy – the emphasis on individual vineyard sites – has shaped Occhipinti’s work since her beginnings. Here, in the historic heartland of the Frappato vine, the grapes benefit from cooling sea breezes and an elevation that favours freshness and finesse. Occhipinti has worked biodynamically for years, with minimal intervention in the cellar – an approach that allows the terroir maximum expression.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Frappato is Sicily’s underrated noble variety: fragrant, with luminous fruit and an acidity structure reminiscent of Gamay or Schiava. Occhipinti vinifies without temperature control, using natural yeasts and without added sulphur during fermentation. Maturation takes place in large wooden casks, which allow the wine to breathe without dominating it. The result is a wine of crystalline clarity that balances fruit and structure – a counterpoint to conventional Sicilian red wines.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The vibrant acidity and moderate tannin structure make this Frappato the ideal companion for grilled tuna, pasta alla Norma or roasted vegetables. It also reveals its uncomplicated charm alongside goat’s cheese, charcuterie or a simple pizza Margherita. Served lightly chilled, it’s perfect for warm summer evenings – a wine that invites relaxed enjoyment.
