Tasting note
Colour & appearance
A deep, almost provocatively dark rosé that is more reminiscent of a classic claret than the pale, fashionable representatives of the category. A wine with ambition and character is already visually heralded here.
Nose
The flavour is remarkably precise and focused, with a cool, almost Nordic expression of Sour cherry and redcurrant. Mineral notes of wet rock and a hint of earthy spice shimmer underneath. Nothing pleasant, nothing playful - this rosé demands attention.
Palate
The palate reveals a structured, almost Burgundian-style rosé with taut acidity and remarkable texture. The red berry flavours continue seamlessly, accompanied by a fine salinity that hints at the iron-rich clay soil. The eighth month on the lees has given the wine a subtle mellowness without compromising its precision. A rosé with backbone and length.
General information
Clemens Krutzler demonstrates with this rosé made purely from Blaufränkisch that Burgenland can produce more than just powerful red wines. The 20-year-old vines from the Ratschen vineyard and the careful vinification with a short maceration period and ageing in used 500-litre barrels result in a wine of remarkable depth. A rare find with only 1,500 bottles.
Food pairing suggestions
The structure and complexity predestine this rosé as a serious accompaniment to food. Excellent with grilled tuna, Duck breast with cherry sauce or Tagliatelle with porcini mushrooms. Also to Cheese dishes with middle aged Mountain cheese a convincing choice.
Special features
This rosé boldly defies the mainstream of light, sweet wines in its category. The long ageing on the lees and maturation in wooden barrels give it a complexity that is rarely found. A wine that skilfully blurs the boundaries between rosé and light red wine and will develop over several years. A statement wine that shows what is possible in Burgenland.
