Wine description for Riesling „from red slate“ 2024 by Clemens Busch

Character
Clemens Busch is among the pioneers of biodynamic viticulture on the Mosel and has shaped his estate in Pünderich into one of the region’s most respected addresses. This Riesling from red slate embodies, with its moderate alcohol content of 11% and dry orientation, the purist style of the house – clear, precise and uncompromisingly terroir-driven. Busch’s wines are not loud statements, but rather quiet masterpieces that reward patience and attention.
Terroir & Origin
The red slate of the Mosel is geologically something special: whilst blue Devonian slate dominates, this iron-rich, reddish-shimmering soil is found only in select vineyard sites. It imparts the wines with a characteristic spicy minerality and often a subtle depth of fruit. The steep slopes above the Mosel, the cool climate and the long ripening periods create ideal conditions for Rieslings with tension and elegance. Busch manages his parcels according to biodynamic principles, eschews herbicides and promotes natural soil vitality.
Grape variety & Vinification
Riesling is the undisputed noble grape variety of the Mosel, and Clemens Busch understands how to reveal its authentic character. His vinification is characterised by minimal intervention: spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts, extended ageing on full lees, no fining. The result is wines that do not seek to please, but rather tell a story – of their origin, of the vintage, of the winemaker’s patience. The 2024 vintage promises freshness and vibrancy, typical of young Mosel Rieslings.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A wine of this style demands dishes that do not mask its mineral precision. Classically it harmonises with trout bleu, scallops or pike-perch with herb butter. It also shows its versatility with goat’s cheese, asparagus with hollandaise sauce or a simple flammekuchen. The acidity structure makes it an ideal companion to Asian cuisine – sushi, Vietnamese summer rolls or Thai curry with moderate heat.
