Wine description for Riesling Nonnengarten VDP Erste Lage 2023 by Clemens Busch

Character
Clemens Busch ranks among the most uncompromising terroir purists of the Mosel. His Riesling from the Nonnengarten embodies that crystalline precision and mineral tension which biodynamically managed steep vineyard sites can produce. With moderate 11.5% alcohol and subtle residual sweetness, this Erste Lage Riesling presents itself as an elegant food companion, placing freshness above power – a deliberate stance against the zeitgeist of overripe wines.
Terroir & Origin
The Nonnengarten lies in Pünderich on the Middle Mosel, characterised by grey Devonian slate in extreme steep vineyard sites. Busch has managed these parcels for decades according to biodynamic principles, resulting in exceptionally deep-rooting vines and complex soil expression. The cool Mosel climate with its dramatic day-night temperature fluctuations preserves the racy acidity, whilst the slate soils provide that smoky-mineral signature which makes Mosel Rieslings unmistakable worldwide.
Grape variety & Vinification
Riesling reveals perhaps its purest form on slate: precision rather than opulence. Busch works with spontaneous fermentation in traditional Fuder, the large Mosel casks, which give the wine time to develop without overwhelming it with wood aromas. The 2023 vintage benefited from a balanced growing cycle. The restrained residual sweetness serves not sweetness itself, but balances the vibrant acidity structure and emphasises fruit clarity – an approach that recalls classical Kabinett styles rather than modern dryness.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This Riesling demands dishes that do not overwhelm its finesse. Perfect with scallops with lemongrass, pan-fried char or asparagus with brown butter. Asian cuisine offers ideal partners: Thai curries, Vietnamese summer rolls or sushi. The wine also shows its full versatility with goat’s cheese or lightly smoked trout. The acidity cuts through fat, the subtle sweetness tempers spice – a culinary bridge-builder par excellence.
