Wine description for Châteauneuf-du-Pape rouge AOC 2020 1500ml Magnum by Marcoux
- Colour & Appearance
- Medium crimson red with youthful luminosity – transparent and clear in the glass, indicating meticulous work in both vineyard and cellar.
- Nose
- Elegant and multi-layered: violets and anise meet the spicy garrigue vegetation of the southern Rhône. Behind this, juicy notes of dark raspberries, black cherries and blackberries, accentuated by pepper and a hint of bouquet garni. A mineral trace of crushed stone lends the bouquet additional depth and complexity.
- Palate
- Exceptionally elegant in texture and classically structured. The Grenache dominance reveals itself in the characteristic liquorice note, whilst red and dark fruit aromas harmonise with garrigue herbs. The alcohol content of 15.5% vol. warms noticeably, yet is skilfully integrated. Fine smoothness and impressive length distinguish this timeless Châteauneuf – already accessible now, but with ageing potential.
- Finish
- Long and warming with lingering fruit and herbal notes. The liquorice spice fades elegantly.
- Terroir & Origin
- Sophie Armenier and her son Vincėnt Estevenin manage 13 parcels across various vineyard sites in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The diversity of soils – quartzite pebbles, clay, red sandstone, colluvium and chalk limestone – endows the cuvée with its remarkable complexity and depth.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Classic blend with approximately 80% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre, 7% Syrah and 3% Cinsault. Hand-harvested with pre-sorting in the vineyard, spontaneous fermentation, four to five weeks‘ maceration. Maturation over 18 months predominantly in concrete, complemented by multi-year barrels and barriques – a method that preserves fruit and finesse.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Perfect with Bœuf à la Gardiane with oranges and olives, paella with chorizo and merguez or a spicy soup with yellow peas, chickpeas and lentils. Also an excellent choice with aged hard cheeses or game dishes.
- Special Features
- The magnum bottle (1500ml) promises optimal ageing conditions. A classic, transparent Châteauneuf-du-Pape that prioritises tradition and elegance over opulence – an interpretation that does justice to the great 2020 vintage.
