Wine Description for Vieux Marc de Bandol 1998 3000ml Double Magnum from Château de Pibarnon

Colour & Appearance
Deep, warm amber with copper reflexes. The viscosity reveals the lengthy maturation and powerful alcohol content. In the glass, an oily, dense texture unfolds – a marc of impressive presence.
Nose
Complex aromatic spectrum with dried figs, raisins and dates. Beneath lie Mediterranean herbal notes of thyme and lavender, typical of Provence. With air, nuances of walnut shells, honey and a hint of tobacco develop. The 25-year maturation has bestowed this spirit with remarkable elegance.
Palate
Powerful yet silky. The high alcohol content is perfectly integrated, never burning. Aromas of candied orange peel, plums and almonds meld with spicy notes. The Mourvèdre grapes from which this marc was distilled leave their characteristic spice and depth. Remarkably well-balanced for such an aged pomace spirit.
Finish
Endlessly long, warm and spicy. Herbal notes return, accompanied by a hint of chocolate and espresso. The length and complexity are extraordinary – a meditative experience.
Terroir & Origin
From the legendary Château de Pibarnon in Bandol, whose terraced vineyards overlook the Mediterranean. Eric de Saint Victor has managed the estate organically with biodynamic approaches since 1989. The pomace comes from the Mourvèdre grapes typical of Bandol from this magical terroir.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Best enjoyed neat as a digestif. Pairs beautifully with dark chocolate (at least 70% cocoa), walnut cake or a mature Comté. Also a revelation with Crème Brûlée or Tarte Tatin.
Special Features
Rare double magnum bottling (3 litres) of a 25-year-old Marc de Bandol – an absolute rarity. The bottle size has slowed maturation and contributed to its exceptional complexity. A collector’s piece from one of Provence’s most renowned estates.
