Wine Description for Vieux Marc de Bandol 1998 1500ml Magnum from Château de Pibarnon

Colour & Appearance
Deep amber gold with copper reflections, testament to the long maturation in the château’s ancient cellar vaults. The magnum presents itself with remarkable clarity and brilliance.
Nose
Complex and multi-layered: dried figs, walnuts and dates mingle with notes of honey, orange peel and a hint of tobacco. The extended ageing has developed oxidative nuances of roasted almonds and caramel, underpinned by Mediterranean herbs – an aromatic reflection of the Provençal terraces.
Palate
At 42.5% ABV, powerful yet remarkably smooth. The texture is silky-oily, carried by a warm spice profile of vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg. Prunes and raisins meld with a fine bitter note of espresso and dark chocolate. The spirit displays remarkable depth and complexity – a distillate that captures the essence of the 1998 Mourvèdre pomace.
Finish
Extraordinarily long and warming. The aromas linger for minutes, with an elegant balance between sweetness and spicy dryness. A hint of lavender and thyme – typical of Provence – bids farewell gently.
Terroir & Origin
From the terraced vineyards of the legendary Château de Pibarnon in Bandol, where the vines benefit from the Mediterranean climate and proximity to the sea. Under the biodynamic stewardship of Eric de Saint Victor, some of Provence’s finest distillates are produced here.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Excellent with dark chocolate torte, pralines with nut filling or truffle-infused cheese. Also outstanding with a cigar or simply neat as a meditative digestif after an opulent meal.
Special Features
Rare magnum bottling of a Marc de Bandol matured for over two decades. The 1.5-litre bottle ensures an even slower, more harmonious development. A collector’s piece for connoisseurs of fine spirits.
