Wine Tasting Notes for Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2020 1500ml Magnum by Col d’Orcia
- Colour & Appearance
- A dense ruby red with fine violet reflections.
- Nose
- A classic Sangiovese profile of great complexity: aromas of black cherries, barberries, raspberries and juicy plums combine with fresh notes of blood orange and mint. Behind this, nuances of cedar, cherry stones, dried violet blossoms, a touch of cinnamon, vanilla, as well as cool undergrowth and crushed rock reveal themselves.
- Palate
- On the palate, this Brunello is dense, juicy and fully ripe. The lively acidity typical of the grape variety meets a structured yet supple tannin matrix. The wine masterfully balances aristocratic elegance and robust down-to-earthness, carried by notes of red and dark berries, baking spices and a fine minerality.
- Finish
- The finish is long and mouth-coating with lingering hints of liquorice and slightly bitter candied orange zest.
- Terroir & Origin
- The grapes come from Col d’Orcia’s south-facing vineyards at around 300 metres above sea level, high above the Orcia river. The estate is located in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Val d’Orcia and, since 2010, has been considered the largest certified organic estate in Tuscany. Following a cool winter and a moderate summer, the 2020 vintage blessed the vines with perfect aromatic and phenolic ripeness thanks to marked diurnal temperature variation in September.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Sangiovese. Following manual harvesting and strict selection, skin contact fermentation takes place for 15 days in specially designed, shallow stainless steel tanks. Traditional ageing spans four years, including 32 months in large Slavonian and Allier oak casks (botti), followed by at least 12 months of bottle ageing.
- Food Pairings
- Excellent with braised pot roast, rack of lamb served pink, classic Bistecca alla Fiorentina or aged Pecorino.
- Key Features
- A benchmark Brunello of traditional character, presented in the impressive 1.5-litre Magnum bottle, which affords the wine an even slower, more protected ageing potential. Crafted by the pioneering estate for organic viticulture in southern Montalcino.
