Wine Description for Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2020 from Col d’Orcia

Colour & Appearance
Luminous ruby red with youthful violet reflections that underscore the freshness of the vintage.
Nose
A classic Sangiovese bouquet of impressive depth and complexity. Black cherries, raspberries and barberries dominate, accompanied by plums and blood oranges. These are joined by mint, cedar, cherry stones and dried violets. Subtle notes of cinnamon, vanilla, crushed stone and undergrowth round out the multifaceted aromatic profile.
Palate
Dense, juicy and of seductive smoothness. The wine displays the perfect balance between nobility and earthy character. Sweet red and dark berry fruits meld with cherries, bread spices and Quatre Épices. The acidity and tannin structure so typical of Sangiovese is present, yet perfectly integrated. Mineral notes of ground stone and leafy matter lend additional complexity.
Finish
Long and lingering with elegant hints of liquorice and candied orange zest. The tannins remain present, yet silky.
Terroir & Origin
The Sangiovese grapes come from the south-facing vineyards of Col d’Orcia at around 300 metres elevation with views over the Orcia river. The 2020 vintage was characterised by a rainy winter, balanced spring and hot summer months. Temperature variations in September favoured perfect phenolic ripeness with high aromatic character.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Sangiovese. Hand-harvested grapes with strict selection. Fermentation for 15 days at controlled temperature below 28°C in specially crafted steel tanks. Ageing over four years: 32 months in Slavonian and Allier oak casks (25-75 hl), followed by at least 12 months in bottle.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Perfect with Bistecca alla Fiorentina, wild boar ragù, braised beef roast, aged Pecorino cheeses or pappardelle with wild mushrooms.
Special Features
A benchmark Brunello in classical style. Col d’Orcia remains true to traditional ageing and creates a wine of stature that is already accessible now, yet can also age gracefully over the years.
