Wine Description for Blaufränkisch Kalk & Schiefer 2022 by Nittnaus Anita & Hans

Colour & Appearance
Dense, darkly luminous purple with violet reflections – a wine that reveals its youthfulness and concentration right in the glass.
Nose
Here is where the promise of the name unfolds impressively: The duality of limestone and slate manifests itself with remarkable clarity. The limestone brings linear precision, whilst the slate shines through with its characteristic minerality of wet, cold stones. The fruit palette is opulent: sweet cherry, morello cherry, blackberry and blackcurrant dominate, framed by a fine nuance of cold smoke. Dark flowers such as violet and hibiscus lend elegance, whilst rosemary, sage and white pepper accent with restraint, yet precision.
Palate
The attack is juicy and incisive – this wine pulls no punches. The dense fruitiness meets a compact acidity structure that functions as an equal counterweight and lends the wine its remarkable tension. The cherry transforms into sour cherry, the berry notes remain present. Herbal accents with ethereal components provide complexity without becoming obtrusive.
Finish
Long and characterised by great drinkability. The acidity consumes the fruit in a controlled manner, leaving behind a juicy, mineral aftertaste with stony notes.
Terroir & Origin
Hailing from Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland, this Blaufränkisch embodies the geological ambivalence of its homeland. The combination of limestone soils (precision, structure) and slate soils (minerality, ageing potential) yields a wine of remarkable authenticity.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Tagliatelle with wild boar ragout and roasted hazelnuts, beetroot gazpacho with olive oil and seared prawns, or surprisingly also grilled sea bream with orange-fennel salad – the acidity structure makes it more versatile than expected.
Special Characteristics
A wine that has grown stylistically with the zeitgeist without losing its identity. At moderate 13% alcohol, it proves that concentration need not equate to heaviness. A Blaufränkisch that brings pleasure now, yet certainly possesses ageing potential.
