Wine description for Out of the dark Blaufränkisch 2023 by Heinrich

Colour & Appearance
Transparent, pale ruby red – a Blaufränkisch that consciously foregoes colour extraction and thereby communicates its belonging to the Vin de soif category visually from the outset.
Nose
Initially reductive with mineral and smoke notes, then the wine opens up with air to reveal a bouquet of red currant, barberry and sour cherry. These are joined by cassis, crushed stone and subtle thyme notes. An aromatic profile that places freshness and minerality before opulent fruit – precisely as an honest Blaufränkisch from the Leithaberg should smell.
Palate
Dangerously quaffable. This wine balances between red and white without being rosé – a category unto itself. Light tannins, a fine, sweet core, plus extract, juice and a dynamism that renders all resistance futile. The drinking flow is phenomenal; the wine glides down the throat like spring water from the Alpine foothills. Uncomplicated, charming, youthful – and yet with the precision of a winemaker who has mastered his craft to perfection.
Finish
Fresh, juicy and invigorating. The wine leaves behind a clear, mineral aftertaste that immediately invites another sip.
Terroir & Origin
The grapes come from south-east facing slopes of the Leithaberg in Winden and Breitenbrunn, on soils of limestone, calcareous sandstone and mica schist – a terroir that imparts the wine’s distinctive minerality.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Spontaneous fermentation with one week of skin contact, maturation in cellar amphorae. Bottled unfiltered, unfined and without added sulphites – a consistently natural approach that preserves the wine’s vibrant energy.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Lightly chilled, a summer wine par excellence. Pairs beautifully with grilled vegetables, charcuterie, goat’s cheese or simply with crispy baguette and butter. Also a pleasure on its own.
Special Features
A natural wine that prioritises pleasure over complexity, without compromising on quality. Gernot and Heike Heinrich demonstrate masterfully here how uncomplicated drinking enjoyment works at the highest level.
