Wine Description for Autochthon Red 2022 by Bencze Birtók

Colour & Appearance
Luminous pomegranate red in the glass – transparent and youthfully fresh, as befits a wine with only 11% alcohol. This translucency is not a flaw, but rather the whole point.
Nose
Here the fruit practically explodes: raspberry and sour cherry dominate with an intensity reminiscent of the finest Beaujolais. These are joined by ethereal herbal notes and a subtle floral fragrance that lends elegance to the whole. This nose whets the appetite.
Palate
Dancer-like in its lightness yet remarkably precise: the vibrant acidity drives the wine forward, whilst fine tannins provide just enough structure. The red fruit remains present without ever becoming jammy. With this moderate alcohol content, it’s not about power but rather drinkability and vitality.
Finish
Medium length, refreshing, with a hint of herbal spice that likely comes from the Kékfrankos. The acidity lingers to the very end and makes you want another sip.
Terroir & Origin
From Lake Balaton, Hungary’s largest lake, renowned for its temperate Pannonian climate. Proximity to the water provides cooling breezes and preserves acidity – essential for this style.
Grape Variety & Vinification
A fascinating blend of Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch), which provides the spicy backbone, along with the almost forgotten varieties Kékbakator and Hajnos kék. These autochthonous rarities bring aromatic complexity and rustic authenticity. The winemaking appears deliberately restrained, so as not to mask the fruit.
Food Pairing Suggestions
An ideal food companion: grilled salmon, charcuterie, mushroom risotto or lightly spiced poultry. Also an intriguing pairing with Hungarian goulash in its lighter version. The acidity cuts through fat without dominating the dish.
Special Characteristics
At only 11% alcohol, this is a counterpoint to over-extracted red wines. Bencze Birtók proves that lightness and complexity are not opposites. A wine that places vineyard work above winemaking technique – and that’s precisely why it captivates.
