Wine Description for Ahrweiler Forstberg 2023 by Bertram-Baltes

Colour & Appearance
Transparent, luminous ruby red – a Pinot Noir that doesn’t deny its origins and winemaking approach. Clear and unfiltered, this Spätburgunder presents itself with that elegance one expects from reductively aged wines.
Nose
Restrained, almost shy, the Forstberg unfolds, yet it is precisely this discretion that makes its charm. The characteristic Baltes reduction – that lightly smoky, mineral note – merges harmoniously with ripe wild strawberries, dark raspberries and pomegranate. A hint of cherry and subtle vanilla complete the bouquet without wood becoming obtrusive. A wine that rewards patience.
Palate
Here the true class reveals itself: fine-grained tannin plays around a firm, precise core. The fruit – predominantly dark – comes across as juicy and lively, carried by a bright, agile acidity that creates tension. With just 11% alcohol, the Forstberg possesses remarkable fullness and presence without ever feeling heavy. The minerality of the graywacke and slate soils is distinctly perceptible – a wine of remarkable balance with many years ahead of it.
Finish
Medium length, cool and mineral with lingering red fruit. The acidity keeps the palate fresh and invites the next sip.
Terroir & Origin
The Ahrweiler Forstberg lies in the Elig Valley at 120 to 190 metres elevation with south-westerly exposure. Graywacke and slate, partly interspersed with loess loam, characterise the heavily clayey topsoil. This mineral foundation gives the wine its characteristic coolness and tension.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Spätburgunder cultivated according to biodynamic principles and permafrost viticulture. Spontaneous fermentation in open stainless steel fermenters, ageing over two winters in used large and half-large oak casks. No chaptalization, deliberately reductive ageing, minimal sulphuring before bottling. Pure craftsmanship.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Roasted duck with porcini mushrooms, veal fillet with morels, Coq au Vin, aged Comté or Époisses. Also an exciting choice with tuna tataki or truffle risotto.
Special Features
A prime example of modern German Pinot Noir: cool, precise, terroir-driven. The low alcohol content and natural vinification make this wine an authentic expression of its origins.
