Wine description for 4 éléments Pinot Meunier La Grosse Pierre Extra Brut 2019 by Huré Frères

Character
Huré Frères belongs to those grower champagnes that give a platform to the often underestimated Pinot Meunier. The „4 éléments“ from the single vineyard site La Grosse Pierre is an uncompromising Extra Brut that reveals the true nature of the grape variety with minimal dosage. This is pure, unadorned Champagne – a homage to terroir and craftsmanship, far removed from the mainstream of the great houses.
Terroir & Origin
The Huré family manages their parcels in southern Champagne, where Pinot Meunier traditionally dominates. La Grosse Pierre alludes to the stony soils of the vineyard site, which lend the wine structure and minerality. The 2019 vintage benefited from a warm, sunny summer that produced physiologically ripe grapes with concentrated aromas – ideal for a vintage Champagne with personality.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Meunier, the „miller’s grape“, is the workhorse of Champagne, usually hidden away in blends. As a solo performer it shows its true face: fruit-driven, accessible, with soft texture and often floral notes. Huré Frères vinifies with respect for the grape – the Extra Brut dosage (under 6 g/l residual sugar) leaves room for authentic expression. The moderate alcohol content of 12% underscores the elegance. One can expect artisanal precision here: selective hand-harvesting, gentle pressing, possibly maturation in neutral vessels or stainless steel to preserve fruit clarity.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The taut, dry character of this Champagne calls for delicate seafood: oysters, scallops or sashimi. Smoked fish, goat’s cheese or a simple mushroom risotto also harmonise with the earthy minerality. The vibrant acidity makes it an ideal aperitif, yet it possesses enough substance for braised poultry or sweetbreads. A Champagne for purists, one that complements the food rather than dominating it.
