Wine Description for Cuvée Irizée Meunier Extra Brut 2014 by Régis Poissinet

Colour & Appearance
Platinum yellow shimmers in the glass with this Champagne, displaying a fine, lively mousse that bears witness to its extended ageing on the lees.
Nose
Remarkably refined and well-balanced, the nose presents itself with impressive complexity. A nuanced citrus fruit palette ranging from lemon through grapefruit to blood orange is accompanied by ripe stone fruits – peach and nectarine. These are joined by blackcurrant and russet apple, whilst notes of shortbread, bread crust, mineral stone and delicate herbs lend additional depth.
Palate
On the palate, a moderately powerful yet precise structure unfolds. The linear acidity is refreshing without dominating. The citrus, white and dark fruit aromas return, complemented by exotic accents of passion fruit, salted lemon and lemon crème. The creamy texture strikes a successful balance with the fresh acidity and mineral precision – a Champagne that prioritises elegance over power.
Finish
The finish remains fresh and mineral, with lingering citrus notes and a subtle saline character that invites the next sip.
Terroir & Origin
The grapes hail from vineyards at the threshold between the Marne Valley and the Montagne de Reims – from the vineyard sites of Cuchery, Baslieux, Leuvrigny, Troissy and Mareuil le Port. The chalky clay and alluvial soils define the mineral character of this Champagne.
Grape Variety & Vinification
The cuvée comprises 87% Pinot Meunier and 13% Chardonnay – an unusual composition that gives the often underestimated Meunier the leading role. Vinification took place partly in stainless steel, partly in wood, with a reserve wine component of 45%. Disgorged on 28.11.2022 with a restrained dosage of 1.9 g/l – a true Extra Brut.
Food Pairing Recommendations
This Champagne pairs beautifully with oysters, scallops, sushi or sashimi. Also an excellent choice with pan-fried monkfish, goat’s cheese or a Caesar salad with chicken.
Special Features
A Champagne that proves Pinot Meunier is far more than mere filler material. With this cuvée, Régis Poissinet demonstrates the finesse and complexity of this often overlooked grape variety.
