Character
Taut, precise and profound – a classic, terroir-driven Chardonnay Champagne with great tension between fullness and freshness, combining elegance and complexity.
Pairing
Fine seafood such as oysters or scallops, grilled turbot with lemon butter, mature Comté or langoustines.
Notes
Single vineyard site of only 0.8 ha, planted since 1964, on chalky soils in south-facing exposure. Spontaneous fermentation, 15–18 months ageing in 600-litre wooden barrels, blocked malolactic fermentation, maturation under natural cork on the lees – bottled with only 1.5 g/l dosage.
Tasting note
Colour & Appearance
Luminous, vibrant golden yellow with a fine greenish tint and dense, radiant texture. The perlage is fine and precise – a Champagne that already displays composure in the glass.
Nose
Complex and multifaceted: lime zest, Cedri lemon and the white mesocarp of the peel dominate the first impression, accompanied by saline minerality like a sea breeze. Beneath pulses a balsamic bass of beeswax and linseed oil. With air, white flowers, roasted cashews, a hint of brioche and dried citrus peel unfold – a bouquet of impressive depth and precision.
Palate
Medium-bodied and juicy, with finely integrated mousse that carries the structure without dominating. Citrus fruit and yellow apple meet a saline, chalky minerality that immediately recalls the chalk soils of the vineyard site. A finely contoured phenolic character lends the wine its characteristic grip – taut, precise, with nutty fullness and a subtle smokiness in the top notes.
Finish
Long, cool and citric, with persistent saline minerality and a dry, almost ascetic elegance. The blocked malolactic fermentation leaves a crystalline tension that will carry the wine for years to come.
Terroir & Origin
The 0.8-hectare single vineyard site Les Blanches Voies in Rilly-la-Montagne – planted with Chardonnay since 1964 – lies as a rare south-facing parcel on sparse, highly chalky soils of the northern Montagne de Reims. The terroir leaves its mark directly: cool tension, mineral depth, not a gram of excess.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pure Chardonnay, selectively hand-harvested, spontaneously fermented and aged 15–18 months in large 600-litre wooden barrels. The malolactic fermentation is deliberately blocked, preserving the taut acidity structure. Subsequently, multi-year maturation under natural cork on the lees. Dosage: merely 1.5 g/l – Extra Brut at its most uncompromising.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Ideal with oysters and raw seafood, with turbot with beurre blanc or langoustine with citrus butter. Equally convincing with aged Comté or simple lobster with sea salt – dishes that do not mask the mineral purity of the wine, but rather reflect it.
Special Features
A Blanc de Blancs of extraordinary provenance and artisanal consistency. Huré Frères belongs among the quiet references of Champagne – no marketing, no compromises. This vintage Champagne is a document of the 2019 vintage and one of the most compelling arguments that the Montagne de Reims is equally capable of achieving great things with Chardonnay.
