Wine Description for Blanc d’Argile Brut Nature R22 by Vouette & Sorbée

Character
The Blanc d’Argile is one of the most compelling expressions of artisanal Champagne-making in our time. As a Brut Nature – meaning without any dosage – this wine relies entirely on its inner balance and the power of terroir. No sugar masks, no intervention smooths: what appears in the glass is pure expression of place and care. The designation R22 refers to the remuage of 2022 and underscores the transparent, craft-oriented philosophy of the house.
Terroir & Origin
Bertrand Gautherot manages his parcels in Buxières-sur-Arce in the southern part of Champagne, in the Côte des Bar, according to the principles of biodynamic viticulture. The eponymous Argile – the clay – decisively shapes the soil profile of this vineyard site: heavy, mineral-rich clay soils over Kimmeridge limestone, which lend the Chardonnay an unusual depth and texture, quite unlike what one encounters from the classic sites of the Côte des Blancs. This terroir is distinctive, raw and honest.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pure Chardonnay, vinified with the minimalism of a winemaker who lets the vineyard have the final say. The grapes undergo spontaneous fermentation, ageing takes place in wooden casks, which lends the wine structure and complexity without overworking it. The absence of dosage – Brut Nature means zero grams of residual sugar – is no fashion statement here, but rather a consistent philosophy: Gautherot understands Champagne as wine, not as a category.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The taut minerality and vibrant acidity make the Blanc d’Argile an ideal companion for oysters and raw shellfish. It also harmonises beautifully with aged Comté, scallops in butter or a simple turbot tartare. For the adventurous, it pairs equally well with sweetbreads – the wine’s texture carries the dish with elegance.
