Wine description for 12 Filari DOC Monreale Bianco 2025 by Case Alte

Character
The 12 Filari from Case Alte is an authentic expression of Sicilian white wine culture, embodying the renaissance of indigenous grape varieties on the island. Catarratto, once used primarily for Marsala wines, reveals its true potential here as a standalone variety: fresh, mineral-driven and with remarkable depth. The name “12 Filari” – twelve vine rows – alludes to the artisanal dimension of this wine, which comes from a modest parcel.
Terroir & Origin
The DOC Monreale lies in the hinterland of Palermo, where the Mediterranean climate is moderated by elevation. This zone benefits from cool night temperatures and significant day-night temperature variations, which impart the Catarratto grape its characteristic freshness and tension. The soils of western Sicily, often calcareous and stony, shape the mineral character of the wines. Case Alte works in a region far removed from mass tourism, where traditional wine culture remains vibrant.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Catarratto is Sicily’s most widely planted white grape variety and, when yields are restricted, produces wines of surprising complexity. The grape naturally brings citrus aromas, herbal spice and a saline minerality. Case Alte likely employs gentle vinification that preserves primary fruit whilst allowing the terroir-driven minerality to shine through. The dry style underscores the straightforward, unadorned character of this Sicilian white wine.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This wine is tailor-made for Mediterranean cuisine: with grilled fish, seafood and pasta with sardines. It also proves an ideal companion to caponata, fried artichokes or Pecorino cheese. The minerality and freshness make it a perfect aperitif wine, whilst its substance harmonises equally well with white meat and vegetable dishes dressed with olive oil.
