Wine description for Zero Brut Nature Base 2017 375ml by Tarlant
- Colour & Appearance
- Rich straw yellow with golden reflections. The perlage is remarkably fine and delicate – a sign of extended bottle ageing of over five years on the lees.
- Nose
- Purist, complex, fascinatingly reductive. Dominated by dried herbs, hay and summer meadows with an alpine character. Complemented by bread-like notes of fresh baguette and butter brioche, never sweet, but rather nutty and yeasty with roasted almonds. The fruit remains deliberately restrained: mirabelle plum, ripe pear, yellow apple, a hint of unripe pineapple. Herbal freshness from lemon balm, lemon thyme and parsley lend the Champagne a clear, delicate definition.
- Palate
- Uncompromisingly dry, taut, energetic. The perlage provides brief lift, then a pronounced, almost cutting acidity takes command. Saline-mineral, cool, with subtle, almost unripe fruit in the background. The structure is linear and invigorating – a Champagne of purist finesse that combines concentration with lightness.
- Finish
- Long, salt-driven, with citrus notes and a freshness reminiscent of tequila. Herbal spice and minerality define the aftertaste – energetic, clear, uncompromisingly dry.
- Terroir & Origin
- Exclusively from the Tarlant family’s own vineyards in Champagne, farmed for twelve generations. Benoit and Melanie Tarlant are committed to extended ageing and traditional, respectful winemaking.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- A three-part cuvée of 32% each Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, supplemented by 4% of the rare varieties Pinot Blanc, Arbanne and Petit Meslier. Based on the 2017 vintage with reserve wines, bottled in April 2018, disgorged only in July 2023 – over five years on the lees. Brut Nature: 0 g/l dosage, no compromises.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Perfect with raw oysters, scallop carpaccio, sashimi, Styrian hash, aged Comté or pan-fried turbot with herb butter. The saline minerality demands purist, precise flavours.
- Special Features
- The Zero Brut Nature is Tarlant’s calling card – both an introduction and a statement. A Champagne for purists, one that doesn’t miss the dosage but rather convinces through maturity, complexity and terroir. Benoit’s signature: time instead of sugar.
