Wine Description for Volnay-Santenots Premier Cru AOC 2022 1500ml Magnum by Rougeot Père & Fils

Character
The Volnay-Santenots Premier Cru 2022 by Rougeot Père & Fils embodies in its magnum bottle everything the Côte de Beaune is renowned for: elegance without compromise, depth without heaviness. The vintage 2022 brought exceptional ripeness to Burgundy whilst maintaining pleasingly preserved freshness – a wine that rewards patience and will mature even more slowly and with greater dignity in the larger bottle.
Terroir & Origin
The vineyard site Les Santenots occupies a special position within Burgundy’s regulatory framework: geographically it lies on the cadastre of Meursault, yet – as a rare exception – may be declared as Volnay Premier Cru provided the grapes are vinified as red wine. This circumstance alone tells much about the character of the terroir: it is a borderland in the best sense, with deeper, more clay-rich soils than many other Volnay vineyard sites, which lends the wine additional structural richness and complexity. The hot, dry summer of 2022 challenged the winemakers but yielded concentrated, phenolically ripe grapes with naturally high alcohol potential.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Noir in Burgundy is no mere grape variety – it is a mirror of place. In the hands of a craft-oriented winery such as Rougeot Père & Fils, vinification serves the terroir: careful extraction, meticulous ageing in wooden cask, always with the aim of preserving transparency and expression of origin. The magnum bottle slows maturation and protects the wine from premature oxidation – an advantage that will pay dividends over years and decades to come.
Food Pairing Recommendations
A wine of this calibre demands partners of equal standing. Roasted squab or Coq au Vin are classic companions. Equally recommended are lamb rack with herb crust, wild boar loin or mature Époisses. Should one open the wine whilst young, it should be decanted generously – or better still: wait a few years.
