Wine Description for Vin de Comptoir Blanc L21.82 Coteaux Champenois by Charles Dufour

Character
Charles Dufour belongs to those rising winemakers of Champagne who are rediscovering the region’s still wine heritage. His „Vin de Comptoir Blanc“ – the name alludes to unpretentious bar counter wines – is a deliberately accessible cuvée from the Coteaux Champenois appellation. With just 11.5% alcohol, this wine presents itself refreshingly light-footed and eminently drinkable, a welcome alternative to the often heavier still wines of Champagne. The blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc lends the wine complexity without heaviness, elegance without pretension.
Terroir & Origin
The Coteaux Champenois designate the still wines of Champagne, which thrive on the same chalk soils as their sparkling siblings. Dufour tends his parcels in the heart of Champagne with great respect for the terroir. The chalky, mineral soils and the cool continental climate fundamentally shape the character of these wines – they impart that nervous freshness and precision for which the region is renowned, even though here the deliberate choice is made to forgo carbonation.
Grape Variety & Vinification
The combination of the three classic Champagne grape varieties is unusual for a still wine: Chardonnay provides structure and minerality, Pinot Noir body and red fruit aromas, Pinot Blanc rounds out with its mild fullness. Dufour’s approach is artisanal and hands-off – he allows the wine time and space to develop. The moderate alcohol content points to early harvesting and gentle processing, the dry vinification to Dufour’s preference for clear, straightforward wines without cosmetic intervention.
Food Pairing Suggestions
An ideal companion to light bistro cuisine: oysters, scallops, goat’s cheese or pan-fried sea fish harmonise wonderfully. Also excellent with poultry terrine, Quiche Lorraine or simply with fresh baguette and salted butter – very much in the spirit of an authentic Vin de Comptoir.
