Wine Description for Timorasso Derthona DOC 2024 by Vietti

Character
Vietti’s Timorasso Derthona embodies the remarkable renaissance of an almost forgotten Piedmontese grape variety. This white wine combines mineral precision with powerful structure – a counterpoint to agreeable mainstream white wines. The variety brings pronounced acidity and impressive ageing potential, placing it among Italy’s most interesting indigenous white wines.
Terroir & Origin
The Derthona DOC in south-eastern Piedmont, around the town of Tortona, forms the historical home of Timorasso. The calcareous marl soils with high mineral content decisively shape the character of these wines. The continental climate with warm days and cool nights enables a long ripening period whilst preserving freshness. Vietti, for generations one of Piedmont’s leading addresses, has devoted itself to this rediscovered variety with the same care that distinguishes its Barolo and Barbaresco.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Timorasso was considered virtually extinct until the 1980s, before pioneers such as Walter Massa revived the variety. The thick-skinned grape yields concentrated, structured wines with remarkable longevity. Characteristic are notes of stone fruit, herbs and mineral nuances. Vietti favours respectful vinification that preserves the variety’s distinctiveness – typically with controlled maturation that does not obscure the natural tension between fruit and minerality. The moderate alcohol content of 13.5% underscores the elegance of the approach.
Food Pairing Recommendations
The powerful structure and acidity make this wine an ideal companion to demanding dishes: roasted white fish, scallops, risotto with porcini mushrooms or aged cheese such as Castelmagno harmonise beautifully. The Timorasso also demonstrates its versatility with vitello tonnato or fried artichokes. A wine with enough substance to accompany more robust cuisine.
