Wine Description for Steiner Hund Riesling Reserve 2008 1500ml Magnum from Nikolaihof

Colour & Appearance
Luminous golden yellow with amber reflexes, bearing witness to over 15 years of maturity. Brilliant clarity in the impressive magnum bottle.
Nose
A fascinating bouquet of mature complexity: ripe apricot, candied citrus peel and honeycomb meet tertiary notes of petrol, beeswax and dried stone fruit. Beneath lies mineralic hints of damp slate and a fine herbal spice, reminiscent of camomile.
Palate
Despite its maturity, surprisingly vital and taut. The low residual sweetness allows the wine to retain its classic, dry character. Yellow plum, quince and ripe peach meld with a saline minerality. The acidity is perfectly integrated, lending freshness and tension. Medium to full body with silky texture and impressive depth.
Finish
Extraordinarily long and multifaceted. Mineralic precision meets ripe fruit and a fine almond bitter note. The aftertaste is cool, elegant and suffused with saline freshness – typical of great Wachau Rieslings.
Terroir & Origin
The vineyard site Steiner Hund ranks among the historic crus of the Wachau with ancient dry stone walls. Weathered primordial rock and gneiss soils lend this Riesling its characteristic minerality and longevity. The continental climate with cool nights ensures the precise acidity structure.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Nikolaihof has managed its vineyards for decades biodynamically according to Demeter standards. The grapes are hand-harvested, spontaneously fermented and aged in traditional wooden cask. The magnum bottle has further favoured the maturation process.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Perfect companion to roasted veal brisket, char with almond butter, mature Comté or scallops with saffron sauce. Also a meditation wine on its own.
Special Features
Archive Release 2024 – a rare treasure from the wine cellar of one of Austria’s oldest estates. The magnum impressively showcases the ageing potential of great Wachau Rieslings.
