Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is the aristocratic heartbeat of Piedmont. On the calcareous marl soils of the Langhe, this late-ripening variety yields wines of an almost paradoxical structure: often a pale, transparent garnet in the glass, it unfolds on the palate with a monumental framework of firm tannins and vibrant acidity. Its most celebrated origins are Barolo and Barbaresco, two neighbouring appellations of the Langhe whose regulations require extended ageing before release. It is this fine tension, paired with a complex aromatic profile of dried roses, sour cherries, undergrowth and subtle tar notes, that makes Nebbiolo so unmistakable. At the table, it calls for rich companions such as braised meats, autumnal mushroom dishes or mature cheese.

The family estate Sottimano captures the subtle nuances of the different soils in fascinating fashion. Alongside the elegant, youthful and accessible Langhe Nebbiolo, single-vineyard Barbarescos such as Cottá or Basarin reflect the full depth and terroir-driven individuality of this great variety.
