Wine Description for Barolo Cannubi DOCG 2020 by Chiara Boschis – E.Pira & Figli
- Colour & Appearance
- Brilliant, dark cherry red with a dense core and delicate violet reflections – a visual promise of the depth and complexity to follow.
- Nose
- This Cannubi is a sleeping giant that demands patience. Give it air, preferably in a generous decanter. Then a fascinating aromatic world unfolds subtly: sour cherry, blackberry and plum form the fruit foundation, accompanied by rosehip and red fruit tea. The spicy dimension reveals itself with cigar box, light tobacco leaves and mixed pepper. Herbal notes of sage, parsley and thyme lend an ethereal quality, whilst pine, cypress and fir evoke Mediterranean associations. Earthy notes round off the multi-layered bouquet.
- Palate
- A truly great Barolo reveals itself here. The fine-grained tannin is not merely present, but structure-defining – elegant, harmonious, indispensable. The fruit flows silkily across the palate, carried by a refined acidity that quietly yet decisively sets the rhythm. The mineral component runs linearly through the entire progression, seemingly endless. The fruit remains crisp and precise, never opulent. Balsamic and ethereal nuances stand in perfect balance with one another.
- Finish
- This wine resonates for minutes – elegant, persistent, with fine cocoa notes in the finale. A finish that underscores the greatness of the Cannubi vineyard site.
- Terroir & Origin
- The legendary vineyard site Cannubi – Chiara Boschis tends just 0.7 hectares of this Barolo icon. Calcareous tertiary soils at just under 300 metres elevation, south to south-west facing: ideal conditions for great Nebbiolo. The 2020 vintage brought grapes of exceptional quality despite weather caprices – early spring, summer thunderstorms, cool September nights – albeit with a 30-40% reduced yield.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Nebbiolo, vinified in stainless steel tank with frequent remontage and pigeage. Maturation in French barriques with light toasting, 30% new wood. One year of bottle age before release. Chiara Boschis‘ philosophy: identical vinification for all Baroli, so that the terroir speaks, not the cellar technique.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- This powerful, elegant Barolo demands appropriate partners: venison roast with nut crust and bread dumplings, grilled tomahawk steak with Romanesco or a refined grey lentil stew with foie gras and hazelnuts.
- Special Features
- Only 3,774 bottles and 340 magnums were produced. Harvest on 22 September 2020. A wine that impresses today, but will reveal its true potential in the years to come.
