Wine Description for Barbaresco DOCG Roncaglie 2020 1500ml Magnum by Vietti
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous, deep cherry red with even colour depth and a characteristically lighter, transparent rim – a classic Nebbiolo image of striking clarity.
- Nose
- The nose is complex and multi-layered, yet never overwhelming. Sour cherry dominates, flanked by redcurrant, raspberry and a dark undertone of plum and blackberry. These are joined by rosehip and barberry, which lend the whole a tart, fresh contour. Spicy depth comes from juniper, black pepper, cinnamon and clove. An impressive forest walk follows: pine cones, fir needles, undergrowth and damp forest floor give the wine an almost meditative earthiness. In the background, delicate freshly ground coffee and pale tobacco leaves shimmer through.
- Palate
- On the palate, the wine unfolds with quiet, assured elegance. The entry is silky and precise, the fruit shines through without boasting. Finest tannins – the hallmark of great Barbaresco – carry the wine with dignity, complemented by a lively, yet never aggressive acidity structure. Mineral tension runs through the palate from start to finish. Everything is in perfect balance: substance without heaviness, power without loudness.
- Finish
- Long, complex and lingering. The aromatics of the palate – cherry, spice, forest – resonate long after the final sip. A finish that rewards patience and invites contemplation.
- Terroir & Origin
- The single vineyard site Roncaglie Masseria lies in the municipality of Barbaresco at 280 metres elevation, facing south-west. The subsoil of limestone and clay shapes the mineral tension and fine structure of the wine. The vines average 35 years old – old enough to deliver depth, young enough to retain freshness.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pure Nebbiolo, harvested on 29 September 2020. After gentle pressing, fermentation takes place with skins in stainless steel tank, including cold maceration for around one month. Malolactic fermentation occurs in barrel. Ageing lasts nearly 30 months – predominantly in large oak casks, supplemented by barriques. Bottled without filtration. The magnum bottle (1500 ml) promises particularly harmonious and slow maturation.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- A wine that demands the dinner table. Ideal with roasted venison loin with pickled cherries and celery-carrot vegetables, equally convincing with grilled Iberian pork with orange-fennel. For those who prefer Piedmontese fare: red wine risotto with roasted hazelnuts and Pecorino is a classic, wonderfully harmonious choice.
- Special Features
- The magnum format is no gimmick for a wine of this class and potential – it is a promise. Vietti’s Roncaglie 2020 has the stature and substance to age for another 10 to 15 years in bottle whilst continuously gaining in complexity. Already a pleasure now – potentially magnificent in a decade.
