Wine Description for Barolo Cannubi DOCG 2020 1500ml Magnum by Chiara Boschis – E.Pira & Figli

Colour & Appearance
Brilliant, dark cherry red with a dense core and delicate violet reflections – a visual promise of depth and concentration.
Nose
A sleeping giant that demands patience. With air, a fascinating aromatic panorama unfolds: sour cherry, blackberry and plum form the fruit structure, whilst rosehip and red fruit tea provide freshness. The spice comes in many layers: cigar box, light tobacco leaves, mixed pepper. Mediterranean herbs such as sage, parsley and thyme lend an ethereal dimension, complemented by notes of pine, cypress and fir. The earthy component promises tension.
Palate
This Barolo presents itself with sublime and proud bearing. The fine-grained tannin is both structure-giving and elegant – never dominant, yet indispensable. The fruit flows silkily across the palate, carried by a finely-woven acidity structure that quietly but decisively sets the rhythm. A linear minerality runs through the wine like a common thread. The fruit remains subtle and crisp, with balsamic and ethereal nuances in perfect balance. In the finish, delicate cocoa notes emerge.
Finish
Lingering for minutes, elegant and of impressive persistence. The balsamic-ethereal notes fade harmoniously, accompanied by fine minerality and subtle fruit.
Terroir & Origin
From the legendary vineyard site Cannubi, only 0.7 hectares in Chiara Boschis‘ possession. The vines stand on calcareous Tertiary soils at around 300 metres elevation with south/south-westerly exposure – ideal conditions for Nebbiolo of the highest quality. The 2020 vintage was marked by extremes: thunderstorms, rainfall and cool nights slowed ripening, but enabled perfect aromatic development with 30-40% reduced yields.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Nebbiolo, fermented in stainless steel tank with frequent remontage and pigeage. Maturation in French barriques with light toasting and 30% new oak, followed by one year in bottle. The methodology remains deliberately restrained to allow the terroir centre stage. Harvest from 22nd September 2020, only 340 magnum bottles produced.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Venison roast with nut crust with bread dumplings and lingonberries, grilled tomahawk steak with Romanesco and sweet potatoes or grey lentil stew with foie gras and hazelnuts.
Special Features
Magnum format from one of Barolo’s most prestigious vineyard sites. A wine that deserves time and attention – decanting highly recommended. Enormous ageing potential.
