Wine Description for Barolo Cannubi DOCG 2020 1500ml Magnum by Chiara Boschis – E.Pira & Figli
- Colour & Appearance
- Brilliant, dark cherry red with a dense, concentrated core and delicate violet reflections – a visual promise of the power slumbering in this magnum bottle.
- Nose
- Patience is not a virtue here, but a prerequisite. This 2020 Cannubi is a sleeping giant that demands time and air. Those who grant it these will be rewarded: sour cherry, blackberry and plum unfold subtly, accompanied by rosehip and red fruit tea. These are joined by cigar box, pale tobacco leaves and colourful pepper. The Mediterranean herbal spice of sage, parsley and thyme merges with notes of pine, cypress and fir into an ethereal complexity. Earthy undertones round out the aromatic panorama.
- Palate
- Sublime. Proud. Grand. Chiara Boschis‘ Cannubi carries its strengths with remarkable self-assurance. A fine-grained tannin structures the wine, clothing the palate without ever dominating – elemental and coherent. The fruit flows silkily, remaining crisp and subtle. The fine-boned acidity sets the pace quietly but precisely. Remarkable is the linear minerality that continues endlessly. Balsamic and ethereal nuances stand in perfect balance. In the finish, a hint of cocoa emerges.
- Finish
- Minutes-long, elegant, seemingly endless. The ethereal and balsamic notes continue, carried by that fine minerality that makes Cannubi so unmistakable.
- Terroir & Origin
- Chiara Boschis owns only 0.7 hectares in the legendary vineyard site Cannubi, on calcareous Tertiary soils at 300 metres altitude, with south to south-westerly exposure. The 2020 vintage was marked by extreme conditions: early start, thunderstorms in June, rainfall in September – yet cool nights and sufficient daylight enabled slow, ideal ripening with a 30-40% reduced yield.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Nebbiolo, fermented in stainless steel tank with frequent remontage and pigeage. Maturation in French barriques with light toasting and 30% new wood, followed by one year in bottle. Harvest began on 22 September 2020. Production: 3,774 bottles, 340 magnums.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Venison roast with hazelnut crust with bread dumplings and lingonberries, grilled tomahawk steak with Romanesco and sweet potatoes, grey lentil stew with goose liver and hazelnuts.
- Special Features
- The magnum bottle promises optimal ageing potential for this great Barolo from one of Piedmont’s most prestigious single vineyard sites.
