Marzemino

Also known as: Marzemina, Barzemin (Trentino)

Mozart made Marzemino immortal – in Don Giovanni, the seducer raves about the „eccellente Marzemino“ before hell claims him. That was in 1787, and the grape variety was as commonplace in Trentino then as Teroldego is today. Since then, it has become a rarity, with most vineyards given over to Merlot and more international varieties.

Marzemino produces dark, spicy red wines with a distinctive bitterness on the finish – not unpleasant, rather like dark cherry stones or cloves. The wines from Cinque Campi in Emilia-Romagna demonstrate that the grape variety can also convince outside its Trentino homeland when given proper attention.
