Tasting note
Colour & appearance
Intense golden yellow – deeper and richer than one expects from the Weinviertel. A wine that signals in the glass itself that it does not follow the standard template.
Nose
Pronounced and multi-layered: apple compote, pear and green banana meet wild herbs and fennel. With air – which this young wine expressly demands – darker notes of tree bark and light tobacco emerge. A bouquet that evolves rather than standing still.
Palate
Taut and precise, with demanding acidity and perceptible tannin. No charmer, but a wine of character: striking structure, substance and depth. A Grüner Veltliner that demands engagement – and rewards it with length and complexity.
Finish
Long and persistent, the herbal spice and fine tannic grip linger on the palate, opening up a broad range of culinary possibilities.
Terroir & origin
The grapes come from the estate’s oldest vineyards in Velm-Götzendorf, in the southeastern Weinviertel, rooted in calcareous sandstone. The Zillinger estate has existed since 1673; Johannes runs it as the third generation, Demeter-certified, with sheep among the vines and home-grown herbs used for vineyard treatments.
Grape variety & vinification
Grüner Veltliner, made following the grandparents’ example: short maceration, fermentation in large wooden casks. Reflexion K unites the favourite parcels of grandfather, father and Johannes into a three-generation cuvée – each generation contributes its share, vinified according to different methods. The result is more than the sum of its parts.
Food recommendations
The combination of vibrant acidity, tannin and herbal spice makes it a serious food wine: veal Wiener Schnitzel, smoked char with horseradish, roasted cauliflower with beurre noisette, duck breast with fennel, or an aged Comté. Also an exciting choice with Asian dishes featuring coriander and lemongrass.
Special features
A Grüner Veltliner beyond DAC expectations: with tannin, wooden cask maturation and skin contact, it moves stylistically towards the structured, almost orange-tinged wines for which Zillinger has been known since his trip to Georgia in 2011. The name Reflexion is to be taken literally – a wine that brings together three generations and their respective signatures in a single bottle.
