Wine Description for Riesling Landgeflecht PJK.Unikat 2021 by Peter Jakob Kühn
- Colour & Appearance
- Intense straw yellow with pale gold reflections – a wine that reveals its 24 months of yeast ageing in the glass.
- Nose
- Here unfolds the full finesse of the quartzite terroir: smoke and dried herbs meet mirabelle plum, white peach and quince. Interspersed are flashes of tobacco and the exotic spice of cubeb pepper. An aroma of hovering complexity – airy yet concentrated, like a Zen koan in wine form.
- Palate
- The Landgeflecht possesses that rare quality which distinguishes great Rieslings: vibrating minerality coupled with inner composure. The texture is silky, almost creamy from the extended yeast ageing, whilst a fine phenolic grip lends structure and tension. Bright, floral notes merge with the characteristic dark smoke of the quartzite – a signature one does not forget. The wine has vitality without strain, energy without noise.
- Finish
- Impressively long and precise. The mineral freshness carries far, accompanied by a fine salinity and lingering fruit echoes.
- Terroir & Origin
- The monopoly vineyard site Landgeflecht in the lower Doosberg unites loess and clay over quartzite – a combination that gives this Riesling its characteristic tension between earthy depth and vibrating minerality. The vines planted in 1978 have developed profound character.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Hand-harvested, whole-bunch pressing over several hours, spontaneous fermentation and 24 months on full yeast in 1,200-litre wooden cask. Followed by further bottle ageing. This patient, minimalist interventionist vinification allows the terroir to take precedence – Kühn philosophy in its purest form.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- A wine for roasted turbot, scallops with cauliflower purée or calf sweetbreads in butter. The smokiness harmonises beautifully with smoked trout, whilst the texture complements creamy risottos or poultry in cream sauce.
- Special Characteristics
- A PJK.Unikat bearing the biodynamic signature of the estate. This Riesling proves that greatness does not mean loudness – but rather precision, depth and the ability to fascinate and soothe simultaneously.
