Wine Description for Contrées 4x750ml BdN Brut Nature: Fragnoy Val Bazot Escharère Val du Clos 2010 3000ml Double-Magnum by Olivier Horiot

Character
Olivier Horiot belongs to those Champagne rebels who create uncompromisingly distinctive wines in southern Champagne, in the terroir of the Côte des Bar. This extraordinary cuvée unites four distinct vineyard sites in a monumental double-magnum – a statement for patience and ageing potential. Vinified as Brut Nature without dosage, this Champagne reveals the pure, unvarnished essence of Pinot Noir from the 2010 vintage. The four sites of Fragnoy, Val Bazot, Escharère and Val du Clos represent different microclimates that together create a complex, multifaceted whole.
Terroir & Origin
The Côte des Bar in southern Champagne is geologically closer to Burgundy than to Reims – here Kimmeridge limestone soils dominate, lending Pinot Noir mineral depth and structure. Horiot manages his parcels with uncompromising precision and deep respect for natural conditions. The 2010 vintage is considered classically cool with excellent acidity structure, ideal for long-lived Champagnes. The four different sites each bring their own nuances – from chalky minerality to dark fruit depth.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Noir pure, without dosage – this requires courage and perfect fruit material. Horiot works according to biodynamic principles, with minimal cellar intervention. Vinification is parcel-specific, often in used wooden barrels, which adds texture to the wine without masking the fruit. Extended lees ageing and the large format of the double-magnum guarantee slow, harmonious development with exceptional ageing potential. Brut Nature here means: absolute transparency and authenticity.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A Champagne of this complexity and structure demands sophisticated cuisine: roasted duck, pink roasted veal or aged Comté harmonise beautifully. Also with mushroom dishes, truffle or smoked fish, this wine shows its versatility. The absence of dosage makes it the ideal companion for oysters and raw seafood.
