Wine description for Spätburgunder trocken 2022 by Ökonomierat Rebholz

Colour & Appearance
Luminous, slightly transparent garnet red – the classic colour of an elegantly crafted Pinot Noir that prioritises finesse over extraction.
Nose
Elegant and balanced, this Spätburgunder presents itself on the nose. The barrique is evident, but never intrusive – smoke, roasted nuts and vanilla blend harmoniously with the fruit. Added to this are notes of cherries with cream, a fine mineral spice from the shell limestone and a hint of juniper, which lends the wine an additional aromatic dimension.
Palate
On the palate, the true class of this Pinot reveals itself: juicy, with fine texture and silky tannin structure. The mild acidity carries the dark fruit with elegance, whilst the wood frames the aromatics without dominating. A balanced, noble Spätburgunder that strikes a remarkable balance between seriousness and drinkability – positively quaffable, without sacrificing complexity.
Terroir & Origin
The grapes come predominantly from the vineyard site Im Sonnenschein in the Palatinate, where shell limestone imparts its characteristic mineral spice to the wine. The calcareous terroir ensures the precise structure and fine tension of this Pinot Noir.
Grape Variety & Vinification
70% destemmed, cool pre-fermented and spontaneously fermented. Ageing took place over 16-18 months in one-third new barriques as well as one- and two-year-old casks. The pomace was gently submerged, colour and tannins carefully extracted – at approximately 30°C with three weeks of skin contact. Bottled without fining or filtration, following malolactic fermentation in spring.
Food Pairing Recommendations
This versatile Pinot harmonises beautifully with rosy roasted veal fillet, duck breast, Coq au Vin or aged Comté. Also an excellent choice with mushroom dishes and game birds.
Special Features
With just 12.5% alcohol, this Spätburgunder demonstrates that elegance and intensity require no high alcohol levels. A prime example of the modern, Burgundy-inspired Pinot style from the Palatinate – approachable in its youth, with potential for further development.
