Wine Description for Riesling GG Monopol 2022 from Odinstal

Colour & Appearance
Intense straw to golden yellow – luminous and dense, with a depth that already hints at the seriousness of this wine in the glass.
Nose
The nose is complex, pure and of remarkable tension. A delicate reduction and a hint of volatile acidity drape themselves like a veil over the bouquet – not disturbing, but seductive. Beneath unfold notes of yellow-fleshed stone fruit, tender apple, fennel green, anise and lemon balm, accompanied by citrus peel, a whisper of iodine and the characteristic spice of sourdough. A wine that already tells a story with the first inhale.
Palate
On the palate, Andreas Schumann’s unmistakable signature reveals itself: a wine of texture and structure, with fine grip, precise salinity and a silky yet gripping acidity. The fruit – lemon, apple, pear, quince, mirabelle plum – appears as if thinly shaved, almost transparent, overlaid with herbs such as verbena, chamomile and lemon balm. In the background, a deep, dry minerality resonates, as if basalt and shell limestone were tangible in the glass.
Finish
Long, deep and hovering all at once – the finish lingers without ever becoming heavy. Salt, stone and a vibrant acidity have the final say. A wine that reverberates.
Terroir & Origin
The Odinstal monopoly vineyard site above Wachenheim is the highest Großes Gewächs site in the Palatinate – a rare terroir of basalt, shell limestone, bunter sandstone and keuper. This geological diversity explains the wine’s extraordinary complexity and distinctive minerality.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pure Riesling, spontaneously fermented, aged long in large wooden cask and vinified with minimal sulphiting. A natural approach that brings the terroir unfiltered into the glass. At 12.0 % Vol., the wine remains light-footed and elegant despite its depth.
Special Features
As the only winery, Odinstal manages this vineyard site – a true monopoly in the classical sense. The Riesling GG Monopol is thus not merely a top wine, but an unrepeatable document of a unique place in the Palatinate.
