Wine description for Im Weingebirge Grüner Veltliner Smaragd dry 2006 1500ml Magnum from Nikolaihof
- Colour & Appearance
- An intense golden yellow with straw-yellow reflections – the colour immediately reveals the impressive maturity of this extraordinary vintage. In the magnum bottle, this Smaragd has developed magnificently.
- Nose
- Fascinatingly complex and aromatic. Nearly two decades of bottle age have created a highly concentrated bouquet: coconut flakes, pale chocolate, cocoa powder and roasted hazelnut dominate the spicy nose. Beneath lies a seductive reduction of dried fruit – mandarin, apricot, pineapple and plum. An aroma that immediately captivates and underscores the class of the 2006 vintage.
- Palate
- The pronounced acidity is the backbone of this wine – lively, fresh and juicy like a green apple. It runs through the palate with razor-sharp precision and leaves behind a remarkable freshness that demands the next sip. Despite its maturity, the wine remains remarkably youthful and vital.
- Finish
- A slightly smoky aftertaste of impressive length. The finish lingers for minutes and awakens pure enthusiasm – the hallmark of a great Smaragd in perfect drinking condition.
- Terroir & Origin
- The vineyard site Im Weingebirge is an individual cru within the Ried Alte Point above Mautern. The six hectares extend between 206 and 225 metres altitude facing north. The paragneiss subsoil, which in places reaches the surface, combined with loam and especially loess in the topsoil, gives this Grüner Veltliner its mineral tension and complexity.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- A wine of this maturity demands sophisticated cuisine: calf’s sweetbread in butter foam, pan-fried turbot, scallops with saffron sauce, risotto with white truffle or aged Comté. Also an exciting pairing with Asian cuisine featuring coconut milk.
- Special Features
- Archive Release 2024 – a rare treasure from the cellar of the biodynamically managed Nikolaihof. The magnum bottle has enabled optimal maturation of the wine. The 2006 vintage is considered one of the great Wachau vintages with perfect balance between power and elegance.
