Wine description for Im Weingebirge Grüner Veltliner Smaragd dry 2014 from Nikolaihof

Colour & Appearance
Brilliantly pale yellow like cowslips in the glass – a colour that announces the maturity and elegant character of this archive release.
Nose
A fascinating aromatic profile that unmistakably bears the hallmark of the 2014 vintage. The fruit presents itself diminished and mature, less opulent than in younger years. Instead, oxidative notes dominate, lending the wine a mature, more contemplative character – a deliberate stylistic choice that honours patience and time.
Palate
The texture impresses: tightly woven, soft and creamy, the wine settles on the tongue. The structure feels compact without being heavy. The pronounced acidity – typical of Grüner Veltliner – initially holds back discreetly in the background, only to unfold its invigorating power in the finish.
Finish
Long and refreshing. The acidity now comes into its own, lending the wine a remarkable length that cleanses the palate and calls for the next sip.
Terroir & Origin
The vineyard site „Im Weingebirge“ is a special parcel within the „Alte Point“ vineyard, situated above Mautern. Six hectares stretch between 206 and 225 metres elevation facing north. The paragneiss subsoil, which breaks through to the surface in places, and the loess-loam topsoil shape the mineral character of this Smaragd wine from the Wachau.
Special Features
An archive release 2024 of a wine from the 2014 vintage – a rarity that demonstrates how brilliantly Grüner Veltliner from great vineyard sites can age. With a moderate 12.5% alcohol, this Smaragd embodies elegance over power. The biodynamically farmed Nikolaihof estate once again proves its instinct for timing and ageing potential.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This mature Veltliner calls for sophisticated cuisine: veal brisket with root vegetables, pan-fried zander with nut butter, asparagus with hollandaise sauce or aged Comté. Also a classic pairing with Wiener Schnitzel or Backhendl.
