Wine description for Im Weingebirge Grüner Veltliner Federspiel dry 2006 1500ml Magnum by Nikolaihof

Colour & Appearance
Luminous golden yellow with greenish reflections that, after nearly two decades of maturation, display remarkable brilliance and depth. Developed in magnum format, the wine presents itself with crystalline clarity.
Nose
A fascinating bouquet of mature complexity: ripe pear and quince meet honey notes and candied citrus peel. These are joined by herbal tea, white flowers and a fine petrol note, typical of aged Veltliner. Subtle stone dust minerality and a hint of walnut round out the aromatic profile.
Palate
Impressive vitality despite its age. The Federspiel category shows itself from its most elegant side here: medium body with fine, still present acidity structure that lends the wine freshness and tension. On the palate, ripe stone fruit, dried apricot and a saline minerality dominate, reminiscent of the primary rock terraces of the Wachau. Perfectly balanced between maturity and liveliness.
Finish
Long, saline-mineral with lingering citrus notes and a hint of beeswax. The moderate alcohol structure of 12% contributes to the elegance and leaves a refreshing, by no means heavy impression.
Terroir & Origin
From the vineyard site „Im Weingebirge“ in the Wachau, one of Austria’s most renowned Grüner Veltliner terroirs. Nikolaihof has been farming biodynamically according to Demeter standards since 1971 – one of Europe’s oldest biodynamic wine estates.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Tafelspitz, Wiener Schnitzel, pan-fried zander with herb butter, asparagus dishes, Brie or Comté, but also Thai curries with coconut milk. Its maturity makes it an ideal companion to more complex, spiced dishes.
Special Features
Archive Release 2024 – a rare treasure from the wine estate’s cellar storage. The magnum format has slowed maturation and preserved exceptional freshness in the wine. A testament to the longevity of great Wachau Grüner Veltliner and biodynamic winemaking art.
