Wine Description for Grauer Burgunder Réserve 2024 by Kühling-Gillot

Character
Kühling-Gillot ranks among the most renowned estates in Rheinhessen and has established itself particularly with precise, terroir-driven white wines. The Grauburgunder Réserve represents the premium line of the estate – a wine with substance and depth that takes the Burgundian heritage of the variety seriously. With moderate 12.5% alcohol and a dry orientation, this is a style that prioritises elegance and drinkability over opulence.
Terroir & Origin
The estate is located in Oppenheim on the Rhine, one of Rheinhessen’s most traditional wine-growing communities. The finest vineyard sites here – including the legendary Oppenheimer Sackträger – are characterised by limestone, marl and Rotliegendes. This geological diversity lends the wines mineral precision and structure. The mild Rheinhessen climate with its warm days and cool nights creates ideal conditions for physiologically ripe grapes whilst maintaining vibrant acidity – a prerequisite for wines with tension and ageing potential.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Gris, traditionally called Grauburgunder here, is treated as a serious variety by Kühling-Gillot. The Réserve designation indicates selected grapes from the finest parcels, often with reduced yields. The wine is typically aged in traditional wooden barrels, which imparts additional texture and complexity without masking the variety’s characteristic fruit. The estate’s philosophy aims for wines with grip and structure – Grauburgunder that recall white Burgundy rather than approachable everyday wines.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A wine of this calibre demands appropriate culinary accompaniment: roasted monkfish, calf’s sweetbreads or porcini risotto are classic partners. The wine also shows its substance alongside mature Comté or truffle-based dishes. The structure allows for more robust preparations such as Coq au Riesling or pork tenderloin with mushroom cream sauce.
