Wine Description for Gewürztraminer 2009 from Nikolaihof

Colour & Appearance
Radiant golden-yellow luminosity in the glass – this Archive Release from 2024 showcases the magnificent maturity of a fifteen-year-old Gewürztraminer at its finest.
Nose
A crystal-clear, lavish bouquet that displays the variety in all its splendour. Roses and Amalfi lemons dominate, accompanied by pink grapefruit and kumquats. The spicy dimension is remarkable: saffron, curry, fennel and mustard seeds interweave with smoky, bacon-like notes to create a complex aromatic tapestry that never veers into the baroque, but remains elegantly balanced.
Palate
Profound and powerful with convincing density. The creamy drinking flow shows little acidity – which lends the wine additional fullness and substance. Distinct bitter notes structure the flavour without dominating. The meaty, bacon-like notes give the wine an almost tactile presence. This is no racy lightweight, but a substantial, saturated Gewürztraminer with character and depth.
Finish
Persistently spicy with lingering bitter notes and a creamy texture that resonates long after.
Terroir & Origin
From the Wachau, where Nikolaihof ranks among the pioneers of biodynamic viticulture. The region’s cool nights and warm days lend this Gewürztraminer its remarkable aromatics at a moderate 12% alcohol.
Food Pairing Recommendations
This substantial wine demands equally characterful dishes: smoked salmon, foie gras, spicy Asian cuisine with Thai curry, Munster cheese or savoury dishes with saffron. Also an excellent choice with pork belly or bacon-based dishes.
Special Features
Archive Release 2024 – a fifteen-year-aged Gewürztraminer that impressively demonstrates that this often underestimated variety is capable of great longevity. Nikolaihof has managed its vineyards biodynamically according to Demeter standards for decades.
