Tasting note
Character
A dry Sauvignon Blanc of crystalline precision, seeking the Burgundian elegance for which Sattlerhof is renowned. With a moderate 12.5% alcohol, it remains slender and inviting to drink, while the late bottling lends it additional depth and finesse. In magnum format, this wine matures with particular harmony – a bottle size that demonstrably benefits the development of Styrian white wines.
Terroir & Origin
Gamlitz lies in the heart of Southern Styria, that hilly landscape between the Koralpe and the Slovenian border which ranks among Austria’s most exciting white wine regions. The steep slopes – some with gradients of up to 70 per cent – rest on Opok marl and calcareous clay soils, which give the wines their characteristic minerality. The Pannonian climate with warm days and cool nights ensures slow, aroma-focused ripening. The Südsteiermark DAC classification guarantees unadulterated origin.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Sauvignon Blanc is the estate’s flagship: in Gamlitz, the variety finds conditions that grant it international standing. The Sattler family – founded by Willi and Maria, today run by their sons Alexander and Andreas – relies on manual harvesting, gentle pressing and temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks. This philosophy of minimal intervention preserves the fruit and the fine, stony imprint of the terroir rather than masking it with wood.
Food Pairings
A versatile food wine: just as harmonious with Styrian fried chicken (Backhendl) and potato salad as with grilled pike-perch, asparagus with hollandaise sauce or a robustly spiced Thai curry. It also shows its strengths alongside fresh vegetable side dishes and Mediterranean antipasti. The magnum bottle predestines it for the festive table – where a generous format always comes into its own best.
