Weinbeschreibung für “Steinriese” Oberbergen Bassgeige Spätburgunder GG 2022 von Franz Keller

Colour & appearance

The colour in the glass is a medium, transparent cherry red with brilliant reflections and a remarkable clarity that is typical of a high-quality Pinot Noir.

Nose

Still restrained, but with enormous potential, this stone giant reveals a multi-layered bouquet. Floral notes of roses and violets harmonise with a basket of dark forest fruits. Fascinating aromas of undergrowth, peat and mineral pencil shavings are surrounded by ethereal herbal notes (thyme, juniper). The subtle hint of smoked meat adds an extra dimension to the wine.

Palate

On the palate, this Pinot Noir is still youthfully closed, but with enormous precision. The structure is impressive: present but perfectly integrated acidity, fine-grained, grippy tannins and a vibrant minerality that testifies to the wine's volcanic origins. Ripe cherries and black berries are accompanied by fine rock flour and subtle notes of mocha and graphite. The finish is long, precise and of remarkable purity.

General information

This Grosse Gewächs Pinot Noir comes from the Oberbergener Bassgeige, a prime piece of the Kaiserstuhl. The Steinriese is a vineyard with light-coloured volcanic soil that is characterised by a high lime and iron content. Friedrich Keller works here exclusively with Burgundian Pinot Noir clones at very low yields. The spontaneous fermentation and 18-month maturation in French barriques (45% new) emphasise the artisan approach.

Food pairing suggestions

A wine for fine dining. Harmonises perfectly with roasted squab, Venison medallions with porcini mushrooms or a perfectly matured Châteaubriand. Also to Duck breast with cherry sauce an excellent choice.

Special features

The Steinriese 2022 is a wine with exceptional ageing potential. Although already impressive now, it will only realise its full potential in 5-8 years. A prime example of the fact that German Pinot Noirs are among the world's best. With its combination of Burgundian elegance and Baden vigour, it represents the new generation of German red wines at the highest level.
